Tamra was born on Kaua’i and grew up in Kīlauea. Part of her childhood was spent on her family’s papaya and banana farm behind Kīlauea Park. She attended Kilauea School from Kindergarten through 6th grade then attended Kapaʻa Middle School for 7th and 8th grades. Her class was the first 7th grade class at the new campus. After graduating Kapaʻa High School in 2003, she attended community colleges on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi, earning an associate’s degree. She then went on to attend Honolulu Community College for their Communication Arts certificate program. Before the last semester of the program, she decided that the commercial world and creating designs for companies that she didn’t believe in was not going to be a good fit for her so she moved home to Kauaʻi. She then completed UH’s Elementary Education program, commuting to Mānoa once a month. During this program, she student-taught at Kapaʻa and Kīlauea Schools and was a recipient of the the Growing Our Own Teachers scholarship. She has served as Vice President of the Kīlauea Neighborhood Association and as Secretary of ʻĀina Hoʻokupu o Kīlauea as the Kīlauea Community Agricultural Center was developed. She lived in Kīlauea until recently and currently lives in Hanamaʻulu with her husband and two children.
